I had a great time getting to hear the authors speak about their books, and the coolest part was that I got to escort Mary Downing Hahn for the evening. I took her to all of the places she needed to go at the conference, and I was her helper during the autographing session. She is a very nice lady who really loves writing books for children.

Here is a picture of me with Mary Downing Hahn, the author of Deep and Dark and Dangerous.

Here we are at the autographing session.

Look at all the people waiting to get their books signed!

Here I am with Mary Casanova, the author of  Some Dog!

Liberty’s Journey – Where should she go?

This week in library I shared a story with you by author Kelly DiPucchio, who will be visiting our school in May! The story was about the Statue of Liberty leaving New York to visit other places in our great country. If Lady Liberty really could go on a journey across the United States, where do you think she should visit? Why should she visit that place? I can’t wait to hear your ideas.

Which books did you like at the book fair?

Last week was our book fair week at school. I really enjoyed looking at the new books they had available. I especially enjoyed getting to see many of you at our Family Reading Night Reading Carnival on Tuesday night. Be sure to check out the pictures.

Now that you have had a chance to visit the book fair, let me know which books were your favorites that you would like to see me add to our library collection. I can’t wait to hear what you think!

Branson Elementary West is Committed to Reading!

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas break. Now that we are back at school, I thought it would be a good time to think about ourselves as readers.

January’s character trait is Commitment, and what a great word to focus on during this time of year. At the start of a new year, many people take time to reflect on the past year and make resolutions, or commitments, to things they want to do in the new year. I want you to think about yourself as a reader. Take a minute to reflect on yourself as a reader so far this year. Did you have any goals that you reached? Do you wish you could have done something that you didn’t? Did you learn something new or make progress with reading? Now think of a reading commitment you would like to make for the new year. Do you want to read more each day, read a new kind of book, complete a reading contest?

Since the beginning of school, I have done a great job of keeping up with my Mark Twain committee reading. I am proud of myself for this task. My reading commitment for 2011 is to try to read books in different genres. I read a lot of fantasy stories, but I want to branch out and try some new things.

I would love to hear your reflections and commitments to reading. Share your reading reflections and resolutions by commenting on this post. I can’t wait to read about your ideas.

Most of you know that I am on our state’s Mark Twain Readers Award committee. I have been reading hundreds of books over the last year to help decide if they would be good books for the Mark Twain Readers Award. Our committee narrowed down our list of hundreds to a list of 25. Winter’s Tail – A tale you should read!

December always makes me think of winter, but today, I heard a very different “winter” tale. We have a wonderful book in our library called Winter’s Tail: How One Little Dolphin Learned to Swim Again.  It is the story of a dolphin named Winter who lost her tail when she got caught in a crab trap in the ocean. Some scientists developed a new tale for Winter so that she could live and grow to become an adult dolphin! This is such an amazing story. If you love books about animals, you’ve got to check out Winter’s Tail from our library media center.

There is a great website that goes along with the book. It has pictures, videos, and activities all about Winter. Take some time to explore the website.

Don’t forget to let me know what you think of the book if you read it, and let me know what you think of the website.

Write a letter to Santa and help others!

In 1897, eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of the New York Sun newspaper, asking if there really was a Santa Claus. The editor promptly replied, assuring her that yes, indeed, there is a Santa. This is one of the most famous news stories in history. Macy’s department store has created a way for kids to help other kids based on this story. They are donating $1.00 for every letter that is written to Santa and put in their mailbox at their store! The goal is to raise one million dollars for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, who provides wishes for kids who have life-threatening illnesses.

Let’s help them reach their goal! Write a letter to Santa using this great online tool. In your letter, persuade Santa that you should be on the Nice List. Also, be sure to let him know your Christmas wishes. When you finish, let me know so I can help you print your letter.

Just so you know, there will be a TV special on CBS on December 17 at 7:00 p.m. based on the Virginia story. :)
